Although it was a first defeat of pre-season for Gateshead, it was also the first win for League One outfit Hartlepool United.
Gateshead gave a good account of themselves against the pro side, and proved they have what it takes to make a difference in the BSP.
Andy Monkhouse and Denis Behan made it 2-0 to Hartlepool, but an Alex Francis effort in the last minute pulled one back for the home side.
Gateshead were without trio of signings Phil Cave, Darren Forsyth and Neale McDermott whose International Clearancing hadn't come through in time.
Francis, who now has four goals during pre-season, will be hoping to secure a first team place, with a likely start at Whitley Bay on Saturday.
