It didn't go according to plans for Ian Bogie and his team, as they slumped to an opening day defeat against fellow part-timers Histon.
The Tynesiders started brightly with efforts by captain Kris Gate, Darren Forsyth and Wayne Phillips going close.
Histon played route one football, which the Gateshead defence, led by James Curtis, seem to be able to clear time after time.
Nathanial Knight-Percival looked the more likely with efforts from throw-ins finding the midfielder in the box time and time again.
Defencive errors by Carl Jones on the stroke of half time led to a Histon corner, and from the corner, while the Gateshead defence were still organising Danny Wright opened his account after finding himself unmarked in the box.
Half Time: Gateshead 0, Histon 1.
Soon after the second half started Gate of Gateshead again found himself in a shooting position. His effort smashed the foot the post and was eventually cleared.
There were few chances for Gateshead in the second half, as new Histon signing Adam Tann thrawted every attempt.
Fitness and stamina let Gateshead down in the end and when Bradley Hudson-Odoi turned Jones on the edge of the area, the new signing for histon had a simple job of finding the gap between near post and keeper Jim Provett to make it 2-0.
By then Gateshead had three forwards on the pitch with Forsyth, Graeme Armstrong and Stephen Richardson all up front. Richardson and Armstrong tried to find the gap, but it was defender James Curtis who came closest to pulling on back.
The game was all but over when Wright notched his second of the game to make it 3-0 with six minutes left on the clock.
Full Time: Gateshead 0, Histon 3.
Verdict: Gateshead will need to improve their fitness if they are to compete fully at this level. Histon are part time, but many others are full time and the club could see more heavy defeats if the area isn't addressed as soon as possible.
